What to Look for When Selecting Partners for your Business?

By Sam Geno

When building a business you will need help. All partners are not created equal. Choosing your partners is one of the most important decisions you will make for your business. They will make you or break you.

First, you will need to look for integrity in a partner. If one of your partners has a habit of ripping people off it is only a matter of time before they rip you off. You want all of your partners to hold integrity as their highest value. If your partners are having affairs, cheating on taxes and so on, it is only a matter of time before they cheat on you.

Second, they must have experience in their field. It's great to work with family and friends but only if they have experience in their field. And their field must be relevant to the type of business you are doing. Would you trust your cousin the plumber to have brain surgery on you? I highly doubt it. So just make sure your partners know what they are doing or you could end up losing lots of time and money.

Third, find partners smarter than you. You do not want to be the smartest person on the team. Always work with people with more experience because they will elevate you to the next level. Also find partners who are strong in the field you are weak at. For example, lets say you are a programmer with no sales skills. Who would you look for? Exactly, an experienced salesman. When each member of the team excels at a certain skill and when the whole team works together, it could be the beginning of something special.

In conclusion, choosing partners is a very important step in your business. People say " you are who you hang out with". If you choose partners wisely, your business will become profitable much more quickly. These are just some of the things to consider when choosing a partner. You probably have your own criteria as well. Remember your partners can make or break you.
